Cake and doughnuts… in the form of Ice cream!!

Way to go Baskin Robbins! Another reason to prolong a juice cleanse…

That’s right, and I wish there was a way to describe this otherwise. The ice cream truly tastes like you dunked a cake doughnut in a coffee. The texture is the same magical melted cake you desire after that hearty post-dunk bite. It was delicious!

Cake and doughnuts

I can’t even name it… It’s so good

I wanted to make creme fraiche as I haven’t before. I bought this ridiculously expensive bacon at the market. I decided that If I am to eat bacon that costs $1.75 per slice… not kidding… let’s make it worth a go!

  • 4-6 slices of bacon (halved)
  • 20 blueberries
  • 1 shallot (sliced thin)
  • ½ cup makers mark bourbon
  • 3 Tbsp brown sugar
  • Crème Fraiche

Oven roast bacon until crispy and deep red. Place to the side on drying rack as to not taint the crispy texture. Take leftover bacon fat and sautée half of shallot and blueberries. Put the rest to the side for later use. Add ¼ cup bourbon and smash blueberries in pan. Add brown sugar and let simmer until almost sauce like consistency. Add remainder of ingredients. Stir carefully as to not damage the whole blueberries. Plate as follows: Bacon, sauce, garnish with crème fraiche.

Baby it’s dry outside: Dehydrated Herbs

Herbs that is! Los Angeles is technically supposed to be a desert . None of the vegetation is natural here… We go through droughts. Herbs cost money. Buy them at the market for $1 and dehydrate or air dry. In supermarkets herbs such as rosemary can cost up to $5-$8. Let’s save a few bucks and dehydrate more… here’s what I have so far. More to come!

It’s not weird…Raspberry, dill prawns

I love dill’s surprising versatility. It makes me happy when someone tells me, ‘”That sounds odd. I don’t think that will work” People are very scared of ingredient ideas for some reason. Here I made dill and raspberry love each other oh so well!

4 raspberries
2 prawns
1 pinch of dill
1/2 cup grapefruit juice
1/2 tsp cayenne
1/8 cup extra virgin olive oil
salt and pepper to taste

Set prawns and grapefruit juice aside. (You don’t want to accidentally cook the shrimp with the grapefruit’s acidity.) In a small bag hand mash berries with the rest of ingredients. Place in bag with prawns. Marinate for 30 min- over night. Sautee prawns. Reduce marinade with grapefruit. Enjoy!

best ever beet burgers with goat cheese spread (aka best veggie burgers, ever! )

beet burgers - brown rice and beet patties topped with chived goat cheese

In Boulder, there was a spot  downtown that we’d frequent all.the.time for lunch or a casual supper that made the most delicious beet burgers.  I never got around to trying my hand at them at home, because any time I had a chance to zip down the hill on our Vespa and enjoy my lunch al fresco on an inevitably sunny Colorado afternoon (and someone else was doing the cooking) I was going to take it.

beet burgers, raw beets sliced

Fast forward a couple of years and I’ve yet to find a place in San Francisco Santa Barbara that has a beet burger on their menu.  I guess I understand….beets, after all, seem to be a pretty polarizing root veggie, and I may be in the minority in the fact that these days I almost always default to a ‘veggie’ burger option when given the option.*

*And that is not to say I won’t absolutely-but-only-occasionally crush a double-double-animal-style

S’More Pie

OMG! yum!

Mikey's In My Kitchen

I made a S’More Pie.

DSC_0107

It was pretty darn tasty if I do say so myself!

It was my Mom’s Birthday yesterday, but we celebrated her last weekend up in WI with family, food, drinks and this pie.

The chocolate is rich and sweet but the fluffy light marshmallow and salty sweet crust help balance it out perfectly. Just like a real campfire S’More.

For the past few years I have always brought a variety of cupcakes from different places in Chicago (Molly’s is my favorite, followed closely by Sweet Mandy B’s) up to Wisconsin for my Mom’s birthday. This year I  decided to mix things up a bit and make her a pie instead. I always get nervous when I make pies, cakes or desserts for people for their birthday’s. So much pressure to make something they will like! I think she liked it….although Mom’s are always supportive and even…

June’s food holidays! Just to name a few

I’m naming them all, actually. A multitude of holidays such as National Iced Tea Day were listed from the fun site TheNibble.com . Root beer day happens twice?? Ridiculous! Please, keep in mind a former President has taken the time to declare these official. ;-P

All Month
